APRIL 1837 COURT NUMBERS 1 - 41.
1. 29 April 1837 Between James Mill and Robert Mitchell, Justices of the Peace. Have Indentured and bound to William Purnell, a colored man, one George Purnell who on the 8th day of March next will be eleven years of age, the son of Amelia Purnell, a colored woman of indigent circumstances, to learn the art of farming until the age of 21 years.
2. 25 May 1837 William Tindall, an orphan, age 17 years on the 1st day of February last indentures himself to Francis Mezick, Hatter, till the age of 21 years.

42. Lambert C. Powell named guardian to James T. Coffin orphan of Abner Coffin. June Court 1837.
43. Noah Adkins named guardian to Martha W. Beatherds orphan of Matthias Beatherds/Beathards. June Court 1837.
44. Elijah Johnson released as apprentice to Isaac Houston. Johnson a free orphan boy of color who was on the 13th of November 1834, bound to Houston to learn the art of farming. That Houston is about to move to the state of Missouri (Houston was going to take Johnson out of state with him, but was stopped) June Court 1837. Elijah was then bound to Johnson Gray. Elijah Johnson was the son of Milly Johnson, free Negro. He was 15 years of age on 7 November 1836. His apprenticeship was that of a farmer. June Court 1837.
45. Elizabeth Long in the care of Zadock W. Hall. June Crt. 1837
46. View and Value the estate of Ara Brittingham, minor in the care of Charles Parker. The annual value thereof at $70.56 current money including slaves. There is on the land an old house without floors and doors out of use. 20 apple trees, there is on the property 878 panels of fence averaging 6 rails to the panel we suppose to be about 75 acres of land in woods and 75 acres in cleared land. The land is valued at 75 bushels of corn per annum when halved with the privilege of sowing small grains. The corn is estimated at 60 cents per bushel. One old Negro man Ely supposed to be 65 years of age at $23 per year, one old Negro man Ben 60 years of age at $27 per year, one Negro woman named Hager about 65 years of age at .06 cents, one Negro woman by the name of Hannah also blind about 45 years of age at 6 1/4 cents per year, and one Negro named Julia 15 years of age at $12 per year, one Negro boy named Daniel 10 years of age at $5 per year, the aforesaid Arah Brittingham is entitled to 1/2 of the said negroes and the profit thereof. 13 June 1837. P.S. All the corn and Negro hire are included in the above $70.56 being the entire valuation of the orphans property.
47. View and Value the estate of James Brittingham, minor in the care of Charles Parker. negroes same as above (Ara Brittingham). Annual value at $70.56 current money. Dwelling house one story 30 by 18 feet, 2 porches 10 feet square, 1 colonnade 15 feet square all in good order, 1 kitchen 15 x 22 feet in bad order, 1 round log smoke house in bad order being 12 x 12 feet, 1 old barn 16 x 16 feet in bad order, 2 common sheds to the side of the barn 16 x 12 feet, 1 small milk house on post 5 x 3 1/2 feet in bad order, 52 panels of pails around the house and garden in bad order, 50 small apple trees and 80 peach trees, there is on the premises 735 panels of fence averaging 6 rails to the panel, we suppose to be 75 acres in woods value at 75 bushels of corn per annum where halved with the privilege of sowing small grains, corn valued at 60 cents per bushel. James Brittingham is entitled to 1/2 of the said Negro and the property thereof. 13 June 1837. P. S. All the corn and Negro hire are included in the above $70.56 being the entire valuation of the orphans property.
48. Robert Mason in care of George Bishop. His distributive share of his fathers estate plus interest on the same $47.14, less cash paid to William Lecompt, $8.81.
49. York B. Girum/Gum/Ginn, a colored boy the son of Mary Ginn, aged 11 years on the 29th of January last to Arthur M. Powell, farmer. 1 June 1837.
50. Benjamin Anderson, colored boy, 12th of July next will be 21 years of age, the son of Louis? Anderson, colored man of indigent circumstances. to Killian Anderson, farmer until 12 July 1846. 3 June 1837.
AUGUST 1837 COURT NUMBERS 51-52.
51. Arco Spence Hails, orphan of John Hails, 12 years old on 29 Jan. next, bound to James S. Nelson to learn the art and mystery of a bootmaker.
52. Robert Mitchell and William Davis to view and value the estate of James T. Coffin, minor in the care of Lambert C. Powell. Report: First the farm in Worcester County adjoining Captain James Pitts' farm near the head of Pitts Mill Pond which we do estimate the annual value of $20 current money clear of the widow's dower, there is fifteen acres of cleared land and two acres of woods, but no timber on it, the cleared land poor, one half the cleared land to be tilled in Indian corn and the other half in small grains, there is one dwelling house on said land 25 feet by 15 feet weather board and shingle roof, and one small corn stack, round logs both in very bad order, 40 apple trees all good and 465 panels of fence which will average 5 logs to the panel in bad order, and house and lot in St. Martins at Bishops Mill, 2 acres of land to the lot, with one dwelling house 18 feet by 16 feet, shingled body and shingled roof in good order, one lumber house framed and planked all rotten, 128 panels of fence arranged averaging 7 logs to the panel in good order, 8 apple trees not good, garden paled with pine poles in good order. The annual value of said lot $12 current money, one Negro boy named Peter 17 years old, annual value 335, 1 feather bed worth $5. 25 August 1837.
OCTOBER 1837 COURT NUMBERS 53-82.
53. George Bishop and Henry Bratten to view and value estate of William T. Walton, minor in the care of Stephen H. Hargis. Report: They estimate the value of $22. On the land there are 2 small tenants one of which we value at $16, the other at $6. On one of the tenants is a dwelling house 16 feet by 17 feet in ordinary repair on the other is dwelling house of about 16 feet square not tendable, fencing indifferent, one half of the above property is the property of Mary E. Walton. There is about 25 acres of cleared land and about 75 acres in woods, the whole tract containing about 100 acres and called "Transylvania", the lot valued at $16 should be tilled one half in Indian corn and one half in small grains. 18 September 1837.

55. Charles Ennis who on the 28th day of January 1837 last past was the age of 3 years of age, the son of Rachel Ennis or Truitt of indigent circumstances, Indentured to Stephen B. Collins, to learn the art and mystery of a farmer. 25 August 1837
56. 25 August 1837 Levin J. R. Ennis, who on the 30 of January 1837 last past was the age of 1 year old, the son of Rachel Ennis also known as Rachel Truitt, of indigent circumstances, to learn the art of farming is Indentured to Stephen B. Collins.
57. 25 August 1837 An orphan child Harriett Tindell in suffering circumstances, age 6 years old on 1 December 1836. Indentured to Henry B. Taylor to learn house business such as cooking, washing, spinning, etc.
58. Kendall Bowden binds himself to Peter Collyer to learn the art of a farmer. Kendall Bowden age 11 years on 9 September last past.
59. James Edward Gravener?, son of Isaac Gravener? will be 9 years old on the 25 January next, bound to Joshua Holloway to learn the art of a farmer.
60. 20 September 1837 George Corbin Harmon, his father John Corbin and Ayme Harmon his mother, age this present date 12 years old, Indentured to John Welbourn, a farmer.
61. Mary L. Lindley is indenture to Levin S. H. Truitt. Mary L. Lindley daughter of Isaac Lindley a free Negro late of the said county of indigent circumstances. To learn the art of sewing, spinning and also to tend and save a crop of corn. Until 10 March 1850 when she shall be 16 years of age.

DECEMBER 1837 COURT NUMBERS 83. - 123.
83. View and Value of property of Crippen Bowen minor, $10 current money. There is on the land a log dwelling house 15x20 ft. with a shingle roof in good repair and a log corn crib very indifferent, a apple orchard of 60 young thriving apple trees, 119 peach trees all bearing, a wattled paled garden 32 panels, very insufficient, 218 panels of fence insufficient supposed to be 7 rails to the panel. There are about in our estimation 5 acres if land in the lot and nearly all clear tillable land being part of a tract of land called OBEDS WILLINGNESS. 11 November 1837.
84. View and Value the estate of Nancy Hall minor in the care of Samuel Johnson her guardian. Consisting of a farm near the public landing contains about 400 acres, about 200 acres in cultivation enclosed with a fence of 1500 panels averaging 7 rails to each panel. There is about 50 acres of marsh the rest in woods and low marshy ground. This farm is to till the one half in Indian corn the other in small grains alternately. The building, two story framed dwelling 27 ft. by 18 ft. colonnade 18x16, cookhouse 18x16, smokehouse 12x12, milkhouse and loom house, same roof 18x10, privy, a framed barn 20x20ft, corn crib 20 x 7.5 ft., two sheds on each side of 10 ft. wide, the buildings are all in good order. A garden of 56 panels in bad order, 55 panels of plank fence in front of the house in bad order. There is a old pine log corn house plank roof in bad order. Chicken House in bad order. There is an Out House some distance from the buildings, with two brick chimneys 40 x 18 ft. There is wind mill in common order. There is a house standing on the mill lot 25x17 in bad order. This farm all together including wind mill and lot we value at the sum of $227.50 including dower. Otherwise the two third of that sum to minor $151.66. (?) mills. There is a house and lot near Cedar Town about 4 acres of ground, house 20 x 16 ft. in bad order the one fifth part at $2.00. There is a small farm adjoining the lands of W. Isaac Jones who is the half owner(?) about 50 acres about 30 acres in cultivation or enclosed with a fence of about 700 panels in bad order. A good part taken with pine thickets and briars and there is a small dwelling house 16x14 in bad order, a new roof is necessary to its renting. There is a framed barn 20x18 in good order there is 20 old apple trees in a state of decay with a small peach orchard in good order. The one half of this place we value a $16.25 including dower other $10.83. 2 October 1837.
85. William L. Knock an account of property. I have received the sum of $150.00 and one Negro women, Leah and two (????? rest of sentence unreadable). Negro woman named Lizzie and also due the same to William L. Knock, minor. James W. Holland 12 November 1837.
86. John E. Knock an account of property. I have received the sum of $150.00 and one Negro boy named Levin and one fourth part of old Negro woman named Lizzie and also due the same John E. Knock, minor. James W. Holland 14 November 1837.
87. Stephen Gray an account of property. I, Henry W. Jarvis guardian to Stephen Gray do hereby acknowledge to have received from Thomas Moore Adm. of Walton Gray, Deceased, the sum of $55.94 being the said Stephen's distributive share of his fathers' Waltons estate. 16 November 1837.

94. George, William, John, and Sally Truitt View and Value their estate. We have estimated the annual value thereof at $50.00 current money, the widow's thirds being $16.66 and 2/3 cents and each of the above minors parts to be $8.33 and 1/3 cents. There is on the land a framed two story dwelling house 23 ft. x 23 ft.,in an unfinished state, a cookhouse 18 x 20 ft. in poor repair, a log smokehouse 12 x 12 ft. and old pine log corncrib 14 x 6 ft., an apple orchard of 128 trees, some in decline, a garden with wattled paling 50 x 65 ft., 1014 panels of fence but insufficient, there is about 82 & 1/2 acres of clear tillable land which should be halved in cultivation and about 20 acres in small timber, the whole tract containing 102 1/2 acres being part of a tract of land called Temple Court(?). 14 September 1837.
95. Sally E. Lindley, who on the 1 March next will be 6 years old, the daughter of Isaac Lindley, late of the county of Indigent circumstances, bound to Robert G. F. Smith to learn the art of sewing and spinning and to save a crop of corn. 4 October 1837.
96. Samuel J. Davis, with the consent of his mother Elizabeth Davis, aged 16 years the 21st of November 1837 bound to William Nelson (No occupation given). 9 October 1837.
97. John Blake, who on the 1st of May next will be 17 years old, the nephew of Edward Blake and of indigent circumstances is bound to Ephriam Matthews, farmer. 11 November 1837.
98. John Martin an orphan who on the 12th of June next will be 13 years of age, the brother of Richard Martin of the county of indigent circumstances, is bound to Ephriam Matthews to learn the art and mystery of a farmer. 1 December 1837.
99. October Ct. 1837 Ordered that the register deduct from the inventory of the estate of Henry Dickerson deceased, returned by Parker Dickerson his administrator the sum of $1700.00 for the appraised value of Negroes and their horse included in the inventory of the deceased estate which were sold by Cord Hazzard Esq. then sheriff of Worcester Co. to satisfy executions in his hands against the deceased.

107. Sally Hooper guardian to Mary E. and Polly E. Rock to make sale of Negro Ann belonging to the orphans at public sale provided she can dispose of her a sum not less than $100.00 and if sold that she account for the same to this court.
108. Gertrude Selby Adm. of William F. Selby ordered that Powell Patey and James W. Sturgis be authorized to make a just and fair and equitable distribution of the Negroes belonging to the deceased among the several persons entitled to them.

122. William Reed an orphan child age 12 years on the 15th of April 1837 is bound to Samuel Tull to be a farmer. (No parents names given.) Dec. Court 1837.
123. John A. Reed an orphan child 10 years of age on the 18th of May 1837, is bound to John W. Selby to be farmer. (No parents names given.) Dec. Court 1837.

125. Mary Jenkins, a girl of color, aged 11 years on the 27th of April last, bound unto William Mason, to learn all manner of housework. 3 Jan. 1838.

Their personal property at $150 and the negroes at $46. Total $196. Half the said sum is Samuel's, yearly, the other half his brother Francis, yearly. There is one log dwelling house 15x20 in good repair, brick chimney, cook house 15x15 framed in good repair, a grain house or barn 14x14 with shed in bad order, 3 log corn cribs in good order supposed to hold about 200 bushels each, 1 shed or carriage house, 1 draw well in good order, there is 60 young apple trees, thrifty, 11 old trees, 2348 panels of fence around and across the said farm in good order, 9 logs to the panel, the farm containing 200 acres of land, two-thirds in cultivation, one-half the said farm planted in Indian corn and the other in oats. The farm is scarce of timber.
