RANDOM NOTES FROM THE ORPHAN'S COURT, WORCESTER COUNTY, MARYLAND, BEGINNING FEBRUARY COURT 1806 THROUGH AUGUST 1810.

FEBRUARY COURT 1806

1. Anne Bell named guardian to Mary Bell orphan of James Bell.

2. Rebecca Watson named guardian to West Watson orphan of John Watson.

3. Nehemiah Blades guardian to Patsy Melvin revoked and that James Davis be appointed guardian. Patsy Melvin orphan of (unreadable) Melvin.

4. Stephen Chaille guardian to Moses Payne orphan of Joseph Payne.

5. That if Anne Bennett wife of the above bounder William Bennett guardian to Jesse Waters orphan of Jesse Waters shall faithfully account with the Orphan's Court...

6. Application by McKennsey Porter to have Thomas Purnell orphan of Isaac Purnell, fifteen years old on the 28th day of June Court last, until the age of 21 years. To be taught the art and mystery of a boot and shoe maker. To read and write and cipher to the rule of three.

7. Application by Isaac Knox to have Jesse Justice orphan of Solomon Justice, supposed to be seven and a half years old until he arrives at the age of 21 years. To teach him the business and occupation of a farmer. To read, write and cipher to the rule of three.

8. To examine the real estate of Littleton and John Richards minors in the case of Polly Richards and to estimate the annual value of the same including slaves, _______, beast, stock and utensils thereon belonging to the orphans. You are also to set down in writing what dwelling houses, out houses, orchards, gardens, meadows, enclosures and those improvements due on the land and the condition thereof and what proportion of the said land is in your estimation in woods and in what amount ________ shall have executed, this trust you are to make known to the said court by your return fairly and decently made under your hands and seal on or before the 1st Tuesday of December next and answer to this commission. Signed Littleton Robbins, Esquire, Chief Justice of the said court this 16th day of July 1805.

Report...and do report as follows that we found one frame dwelling house 20 by 17 1/2 with the under floor laid down in brick _____ ________ one log kitchen fifteen feet square _______ roof ___ ________ ______ floor and 662 panels of fence and about eight logs to the panel with out slats, 30 small apple trees and 180 small peach trees, the land containing by estimation 40 acres, 30 of which we believe to be in woods and we believe the value is worth 6 pounds a year. 28 day December 1805.

9. Viewed the real estate of Mary Mitchell orphan of Joshua. Elizabeth Smack her guardian. Improvements on the land where Joshua Mitchell, deceased, did lately live. One dwelling house 22 1/2 feet by 28 feet with a porch in front and a small shed room at each end, 15 1/2 feet by 12 1/2 feet , with three brick chimneys in bad repair, one cook house 20 by 15 feet brick chimney with a cellar under it, and a shed in front found in bad repair, one meat house 15 feet by 12 feet sawed gum logs brick chimney in very bad repair with a chore house 10 by 20 cypress boards and shingled roof, one milk house 10 feet square in good repair, on old hen house 15 by 7 feet sawed logs and a old stable sawed logs 17 1/2 by 12 1/2 in bad repair, one barn 30 feet by 30 feet wanting a little repair one _________ 20 by 15 feet ________ _________ in bad repair, one corn crib of sawed gum logs 20 by 8 with a 10 foot shed on one side, one old logged house 10 feet square standing in the garden _______ _________ indifferent, one old logged stable in the orchard 15 by 9 in bad repair, one garden 140 feet by 110 feet fenced with cypress in bad repair, one hundred and 12 apple trees, 3247 panels of fence, 10 rails to a panel. We further suppose and think of said land to be in annual value of said land to be $260 with the privilege of dividing one third of the said land in Indian Corn and sowing small grains.

Improvements on the land which Elizabeth Smack now lives one dwelling house 20 feet by 17 1/2, shed on one side in bad repair, one old logged house 18 1/2 by 17 in bad repair, one old logged house 15 by 15 in bad repair, one sawed gum log corn crib 10 feet by 7 1/2 in good repair, one old barn 17 1/2 by 17 1/2 shed all a round in bad repair, thirteen hundred panels of fence on said land, 8 rails to the panel exclusive of Mrs. Smacks third and the amount value of the said land exclusive of the widow's dower at 50 dollars and we suppose one sixth of said tract of land to be in woods and not more than one third of said to be tilled in any one year in Indian corn. Also one tract of land called Striban/ Stribarn? Hribarn? about one hundred and sixty acres principally cypress swamp. The annual value of all the aforesaid land accounting to three hundred ten dollars. 6 October 1804.

10. Distribution of Jesse Waters estate. Meant at the house of William Bennett. We have allowed that William Bennet in right of his wife who intermarried with Anne the widow of Jesse Waters. Daughter Polly Waters and son Jesse Waters.

11. Nancy Nicholson amount of sales of negro Moses by William Dickerson her guardian. She is orphan of Isaac Nicholson. At public auction Wednesday 5 June, 1805 and was struck off to Robert J. H. Handy he being the highest bidder at $220.

12. 18 Feb. 1806 That William Mauthews (Mathews) binds his son Stephen Mills Mathews an apprentice to Jeremiah Flowers. To bring up the said Stephen in the best way that Jeremiah Flowers shall think best, until the age of 21 years. (Present age not given).

13. 18 Feb. 1806 That Thomas Daniel son of Rachel Daniel, his mother, aged ten years two months is bound to Coventon Townsend to learn the art and mystery or occupation of a farmer. Term for two years and 10 months. Rachel her mark.

14. 15 Feb. 1806 Between Amy Maddox of Somerset County binds her son Ebben Maddox to Jonathan Parsons, being seventeen years old on the 1st day of March next. To the art and mystery of a farmer, until the age of 21 years. Amy her mark.

15. 15 March 1806 That James Broadwater son of James Broadwater Esquire, aged sixteen years and five months and twenty-five days. By consent of his father, is bound to John Williams. To follow the business of the water as a sailor or any other business except as a farmer. For four years and six months and six days.

16. Anne Bell and William Bell to make sale of the deceased whole personal estate.

17. Thomas Franklin and wife, She is Ex. of John Kerby.

18. Martha Duncan, adm. of John Duncan, deceased.

19. Curtis Jenkins and John J. Williams, guardian to Anne, John, William Turpin, orphans of John Turpin made sale of two small negroes by the names of George and Hezicah allotted to the orphans out of the estate of William Turpin, deceased. Feb. 1806.

20. Zipporah Bishop adm. of Charles Bishop, deceased is authorized to sell the whole personal estate of the deceased.

34. Isaiah Cooper, orphan of Bennett Cooper, 13 years of age in September next, bound to James Riggin, farmer.

35. John Powell of John in care of Keziah Powell view and value. That the minor had an undivided right in about 150 acres of land where his uncle Belithia Powell had at the time of his decease and his said uncle willed it to him and his sisters Esther who is upward of 16 years of age, and Polly who has lately intermarried with Jesse Davis of Jesse, but this guardian Keziah Powell is willed 1/4 of the profit thereof during her widowhood.

36. Johnson Gray personal estate in the hands of Abishia Drawbridge.

37. John Powell distribution of personal property. The widow. His children Esther, John and Molly Powell.

38. Belithia Powell distribution of personal estate to Esther, John and Molly Powell his niece and nephew.

39. That in the October Term 1805 came Muajah Hill one of the legacies of Schoolfield Parker, deceased. Gave to Henry Parker the labors of his negro Frederick, until Muajah came of age on provision that his said Ex. should keep old Peg, his negro wench, from any cost to the County or Parish where she lives and after her decease, Frederick to be delivered to Micajah or his heirs. That Henry Parker has not done what was required of him and that Parker is planning to move to Baltimore and that without the Court, Micajah will lose his legacy. That old Peg is not yet dead.

40. John Pettite, orphan of Absolom/Abraham Pettite, supposed to be 15 years of age. Bound to John Taylor, boot and shoemaker.

41. Bridget Isaacs daughter of Esther Isaacs, a free mulatto, eight years old last Christmas is bound to William Floyd till age 16 years, to learn the art and mystery of spinning and weaving.

42. Laben Hudson orphan of Sterling Hudson age 15 years old the 13th of last August is bound to John Taylor to learn the art and mystery of a boot and shoemaker. April 1806.

43. 15 April 1806 Between Samuel Handy, McKenny Porter and George Hayward, three of the Trustees of the Poor of Worcester County and Joseph E. Bishop ...Do place a poor child Polly Porter who is lawfully settled in the poor house, bound to Joseph E. Bishop until the age of 16 years to learn all kinds of house work, spinning, sewing, weaving, (no age given, no parents names given).

44. 19 April 1806 William Vance binds his son William Vance as apprentice to David Cathell to learn the art and mystery of a carriage maker for seven years, being now fourteen years old.

45. Ordered that Sally Gray Executrix of Joseph Gray deceased. To notify creditors of deceased in the MIRROR printed in Wilmington, Delaware and the STAR printed in Easton, Maryland.

46. Ordered that Elizabeth Selby, Executrix of Thomas Selby deceased to make sale of a wind mill erected on the land of Peter Parker.

47. The estate of Tadock Selby. In account with William Selby, Ex. (1797) To negro Comfort appraised which is since dead, 5 pounds. To negro Joshua, 10 pounds. To negro Able, 45 pounds. To negro Charlotte, 5 pounds. To funds paid for apprehending negro Daniel who ran away. 11.5 pounds Total 86.50 To William Selby adm. of Tadock Selby and Parker Selby one of the representative made oath that the several negroes as written here have died since the appraisal of the estate and that the sum of 11.5 was paid for taking up negro Daniel who ran away. Ordered that the Register allow William Selby, Adm. of Tadock Selby deceased the sum of 86.50 pounds for the appraised value of the property contained in the foregoing and for taking up negro Daniel who ran away.

48. That Hyram B. Brittingham was indentured to Matthais Brittingham to learn the art of farming. He will be 21 years old on 22 October 1857. Hyram the son of John Brittingham, deceased. Also, John H. Brittingham indentured to Matthais Brittingham to learn the art of farming. He will be 21 on 22 November 1854, John H. is the son of John Brittingham, deceased. Document date 21 March 1842.

MISC. NOTES ON BRITTINGHAM AND QUILLIN.

49. John Brittingham, son of Mary Brittingham, indentured to Joshua Johnson. He will be 15 years on 29 June next. Date of document 20 March 1803.

50. Rowland Brittingham, orphan of William Brittingham, 13 years old on the 11 July last, indentured to James Dennis. 1803.

51. Solomon Brittingham died in Baltimore, Maryland. Isaac Brittingham adm. August Court 1802.

52. James Brittingham, his guardian is Nathaniel Bowen. June Court 1803.

53. Purnell Brittingham, orphan of Elijah Brittingham (no age given). To Benjamin Gumby to farming. 7 Aug. 1803.

54. Joseph Quillen, the orphan of John Quillen, about 15 years of age bound to Joseph Tubbs. To be taught the art of a cordwainer. October Court 1786.

55. Nathaniel Brittingham indentured to Elijah Nelson as a blacksmith for seven years His mother not named. 12 Aug 1801.

56. Elizabeth was the wife of Elijah Brittingham Feb. Court 1802.

57. Anthony West Brittingham son of Tabitha Brittingham, 9 years of age on the 1st day of March next, indentured to Peter Townsend of John to learn the art of farming.

58. Elizabeth Brittingham guardian to Isaac Brittingham orphan of Isaac Brittingham. Also, she is guardian to Solomon Brittingham and George Brittingham sons and orphans of Isaac Brittingham. Feb. Court 1817.

59. A poor child named Harriett Brittingham, daughter of Elisha, deceased indenture to Abraham Gibbs. Harriett was in the poor house. indentured to do housework and family occupations. Her age is given as 8 years old. Need date.*******

63. Tadock Purnell and Joshua Prideaux, Esq., to view and value the property of Moses Johnson ward in the care of Elizabeth Johnson, his guardian.

JUNE COURT 1806

83. That Levi Merrill be appointed as guardian to Levin R. Marchment, orphan of Riley Marchment.

84. That William Dickerson and wife be appointed guardian to Nancy Nicholson, orphan of Isaac Nicholson.

85. Esme Purnell and Thomas D. Purnell have examined the real estate of Betsy Rigsby minor in the care of Milby Purnell.

Report: That we found on a tract of land called SANDY POINT containing about 65 acres in which there is about 4 or 5 acres in woods, one dwelling house 33 by 16 with brick gabled end with a chimney in each end with a shingle roof weather boarded with log press? boards in bad repair, one sawed log smoke house 10 ft. square in good repair, one old logged kitchen 15 ft. square in bad repair, one hundred apple trees indifferent, 120 peach trees, 1 pear tree, 11 cherry trees, 2 plum trees, 40 panels of _____ and railed fence, 610 panels of fence 7 logs high, we believe the annual value to be $20 per year, the guardian allowed to tend 1/2 of orphans property annually: one lot of ground containing 15 acres about nine acres of the same in woods adjoining Purnell Porter's land we found on the said land one dwelling house 15 by 12 1/2 in good repair, one framed shop 10 feet square in good repair, one old logged house 20 by 14 in bad repair, one old logged stable 15 by 12 in bad repair, 216 panels of fence about 7 logs high, 14 small peach trees, we believe annual value of said lot to be worth $16 per year. The said guardian is allowed to tend one half of the orphans property annually. One half of the annual value of the above land for the use of Betsy Rigsby. 18 Feb. 1806.

86. Tadock Sturgis and Ralph Milbourne have examined the real estate of Levin and Lottie Bishop, minor in the care of Frederick Conner. That on 15 April 1806...a tract of land called SCARBROUGH'S CASTLE containing about 153 acres and about 1/2 cleared belonging to Levin Bishop and Lotty Bishop. Finding thereon: one dwelling house 18 feet square with a cellar under it, shingle roof, weather boarded with planks, with one plank floor and planked in the upper floor but not laid down, a brick chimney, one glass window with 15 panes of glass in bad repair, one small garden whatted with pine poles, 43 apple trees, 1226 panels of fence, 7 logs high in bad repair. The annual value 9 pounds 7 shillings and 6 pence current money.

87. Ezekiel Coston and William Aydolett have examined the real estate of West Watson minor in the care of Rebecca Watson. Report: 13 March 1806. One old log house 16 feet square also 40 small apple trees, 21 peach trees, 310 panels of fence about 5 or 6 rails to the panel, the tract of land consist of 30-35 acres by the best information we can get, about 30 acres believed to be in woods, annual value $6 per year to be paid to the guardian.

88. Application by Joshua Evans to have John Clark orphan of Rhodes Clark, fifteen years old on the 27th Feb. last. Bound to Joshua Evans until the age of twenty one. To learn the art and mystery of a boot and shoemaker. Sarah Clark said mother of John Clark present in court. June Court 1806.

89. John Bishop and Lemuel Turpin to make distribution of the estate of Parker Selby Jr. and Glippery Selby, his widow, deceased, in the hands of Charles Hinman. To Milby Selby Purnell for the legacies bequeathed him by his grandfather Parker Selby. To Ann Purnell. To Isaac Selby and Nancy Selby children of William Selby, deceased, and grandchildren of Parker and Glippery Parker.

90. Moses Fisher son of Patience Fisher, age 15 years and 8 months, to William Aydelotte, farmer. June 1806.

AUGUST COURT 1806

91. John Taylor guardian to William Benston orphan of Elias Benston.

92. That his brother's daughter by the name of Ritta Flowers, an orphan, under the age of 16 years has a right to sundry negroes which some years past were stolen from Dorchester County in this State--and are at present in the possession of a certain William Prentiss in the State of Virginia, who took them from a certain Eleazer Johnson who is alleged to have stolen them. He further states that the said minor is in the State of Kentucky and destitute of friends and he believes she does not know where the said negroes are and under the circumstances believing that if your petitioner was appointed her guardian it would be a means of securing said property for the said minor. Signed Jeremiah Flowers. Jeremaiah Flowers named guardian to Ritta Flowers orphan of Juluis Augustus Flowers.

93. William Christie orphan of William Christie, 13 years old in October next, bound to Lemuel Bowen, blacksmith.

94. Kendall Scarbough distribution of personal estate. Kendall Scarbough orphan of Kendall Scarbough. Sarah Hinman, his mother and the late widow of Kendall Scarbough who intermarried with James Hinman.

95. John Kerby distribution of personal estate. Widow Charlotte who intermarries with Thomas Franklin. Robert Kerby (alive 1806). Milby Kerby who died about the year 1805. Molly Kerby who died about the year 1796, leaving no issue. William Kerby died about the year 1797. Francis Franklin, half brother to surviving Robert Kerby. Lemuel Franklin, half brother to surviving Robert Kerby.

96. Leah Jarman intermarried with Nathaniel Wilkins. She was adm. of John Jarman.

97. Zacharis Smith son of James Smith, Sr., age 16 on the 3rd of March last, to William Smith, house carpenter.

98. James Holland son of Betsy Holland, age 17 on 1 March 1806, to James Tilghman, shoe and boot maker.

99. Sarah Henderson guardian to Noah Henderson orphan of John T. Henderson. Sarah Henderson guardian to Nancy Henderson orphan of John T. Henderson.

112. Walter Turner son of Henry Turner, who on 1 January next will be 17 years old to Joseph Kenny, shoe and boot maker.

113. Henry Nutts had a daughter Harriett Nutts, bound to Levin Henderson.

114. William Gibbons and Mary his wife who is the only daughter and only child of Joseph Bonsee or Bousee.

115. William Winder guardian to Charlotte Rackliffe. Charlotte wishes to go to a boarding school in Baltimore to improve her education. She is now in the 16th year of her life. Approved.

116. Received of Obediah Carey Ex. of Levi Carey, legacies given to me by my father. Signed; Elisha Carey, Handy Carey, Levi Carey, Sarah Carey, Levin Carey.

DECEMBER COURT 1806

117. John Richardson and Molly Richardson view and value. Heirs of Robert Martin Richardson, deceased. Nancy Richardson guardian. They are entitled to 1/5 each. A seaside estate.

118. From Sampson Wright and Betty, his wife. Betsy Smith and Rosa Smith, my share of my father's Henry Smith's estate.

JANUARY COURT 1807

119. Levin Townsend an account of property received by his children.
